Mind being controlled? Become the media!
Multidisciplinary Festival of Independent Media
&
Underground Art
Oct. 16 - 31, 2009
The North of Nowhere (NoN) Expo is a non-profit and volunteer-operated activist-arts festival that is committed to fostering the awareness of the arts as tools for positive social change. Every NoN Expo presents Edmonton audiences with thought-provoking films, speakers, socio-political arts and an opportunity for dialogue on important issues. The NoN Expo waters 2 flowers with one cup as the ESPA's annual contribution to the Humanitarian Arts Manifesto.
This year we have several core programming themes and super-special events which are:
- Food Security: Our opening weekend falls on World Food Day & the Int'l Day for the Eradication of Poverty, where we present several award-winning films, and a one-day Silent Art Auction and Food Security & Fair Trade Fair
- Palestine Film Fest: Several award-winning films and Special Guest Speaker Mordecai Briemberg
- Prison Justice: Several award-winning films featuring internationally-supported political prisoners Mumia Abu Jamal, MOVE, the Angola 3 and the Animal Liberation Front, as well as an Art Exhibit by Just Seeds Critical Resistance (& others)
- Media Democracy: Several award-winning films covering everything from media literacy & copyright issues, from the corporatization of radical culture to radical jesters, from censored news to the Security & Prosperity Partnership (SPP)... and more!
- AMPA & ESPA Small Press & Maga/Zine Fair: The Alberta Magazine Publisher's Association & Edmonton Small Press team up to present a one-day event in the Library Theatre Lobby to expose you to some of the great literary activities happening in our backyards. After checking out the mags, pop into the Edmonton Room for beautiful short experimental films & animations.
- The Beehive Collective! Beautiful fabric banners & patches by the internationally critically-acclaimed Beehive Collective will be installed at the library for the full run of the Expo, but that's not all! Join us for an in-person Workshop with the Bees, a design collective that uses elaborately illustrated banners to discuss the effects of colonialism, militarization, resource-extraction and corporate globalization.

SOME GENERAL INFO TO NOTE:
Thanks for your interest in our activities and supporting independent media & underground art in Alberta! The North of Nowhere Expo is dedicated to ESPA Member & Supporter Helen Folkmann (who named the Expo) - she was an inspiration and remains with us in spirit.
